Runtime versions

How FireOTA keeps JavaScript and native code compatible.

What a runtime version is

A runtime version names a set of native code. A bundle runs only on binaries with exactly the same runtime version — the server and the SDK both enforce it, because JavaScript that calls missing native code crashes.

Choosing a strategy

  • Simplest: runtime version = marketing version (versionName / CFBundleShortVersionString), bumped with every store build.
  • Bump it when you add or upgrade a native dependency, change android/ or ios/, or upgrade React Native.
  • Narrow a release further with a native version constraint such as >=1.3.0, ^1.3.0 or 1.3.x.
